Gouramis and Active Community
Why Keep Them? As they grow and mature, gouramis offer beautiful colors and personalities. This labyrinth fish is relatively easy to care for and is peaceful. This community includes some mid-sized active fish that are compatible with fish of similar size.
There are several different gourami species in the aquarium trade. It's easier to break them down into 3 different groups based on similar sizing and temperament.
Group 1: Sparkling Gourami (1.5''), Croaking Gourami (2.5''), Honey Gourami (2-2.5'')
Group 2: Sunset Thick Lipped Gourami (3.5-4'') and Fancy Dwarf Gourami (3-5")
Group 3: Pearl Gourami (4-5''), Blue Gourami (5-6''), Gold Gourami (5-6''), Lavender Gourami (5-6''), Opaline Gourami (6''), Platinum Gourami (5-6"), Moonlight Gourami (5-6''), Snakeskin Gourami (8-10'') and Kissing Gourami (10-12'').
Tank Conditions: (Group 1) Minimum tank size of 5 gallons.10-20 gallons is preferred if keeping gouramis in groups (3+). Native to slow moving streams that are heavily littered with plant, leaf and tree matter. A power filter is recommended to provide optimal filtration, but be sure to select one where you can adjust the flow rate. Also, be sure to heavily plant the aquarium with tall plants that will grow to the surface.
(Group 2) Minimum tank size of 10 gallons. 20-30 Gallons is preferred. Native to slow moving streams that are heavily littered with plant, leaf and tree matter. A power filter is recommended to provide optimal filtration, but be sure to select one where you can adjust the flow rate. Also, be sure to heavily plant the aquarium with tall plants that will grow to the surface.
(Group 3) Minimum tank size of 40 gallons. 50-90 is preferred. Native to slow moving streams that are heavily littered with plant, leaf and tree matter. A power filter is recommended to provide optimal filtration, but be sure to select one where you can adjust the flow rate. Also, be sure to heavily plant the aquarium with tall plants that will grow to the surface.
Feeding:They will accept a variety of foods. Feed two to three times a day with flake food, small pellets, mysis shrimp, plankton, and bloodworms. Best coloration is obtained when fed a variety of quality foods including frozen foods.
Gouramis are a great option for a planted tank to add a pop of color and personality. With the smaller species, the overall manner is milder than some of the larger species that may be a bit more semi aggressive. Rainbowfish: Most species of Rainbowfish are compatible.
Barbs :Rosy, Black Ruby Clown, Gold, Filament, Odessa,Tinfoil, Checkered, Cherry.
Cichlids: Keyhole,Kribensis, Blood Parrot, Jurupari.
Danios: Leopard Danio, Zebra Danio, Mustache Danio, Pearl Danio, Giant Danio.
Loach, Botia: Clown Loach, Kuhli Loach, Weather Loach, most Botias.
Livebearers: Swordtails, Large Sailfin Mollies.
Sharks: Red Tail Shark, Red Rainbow Shark,Tri Color Shark, Roseline Shark.
Large Tetras: Black Tetra, Congo Tetra, Serpae Tetra.
Other Fish: Algae Eaters, Blind Cave Fish, Chilodus Headstander, Prochilodus,
Siamese Algae Eater, Silver Dollar, Red Hook Silver Dollar.
Eels: Fire, Spiney, Tire Track.
Catfish: A wide variety of catfish will work including Corydoras, small Plecostomus, Synodontis and many others.
Avoid: small fish that may be frightened by their activity
