Dwarf African Clawed Frogs
Why Keep Them? Dwarf African Frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) are comical and interesting to observe. They can be kept in a small tank by themselves, or in a community tank with other small peaceful fish. They are a different species than the African Clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) which gets bigger.
Housing Them In small Desktop Tanks (5-10+ gal) :. These frogs are highly social, so a tank of at least 5 gallons is recommended so that 2-3 can be housed together. If you decide to use a small desktop tank, then a species only tank is best. (only keeping a group of frogs together and no other fish). Purchase a small submersible heater if the room temperature ever drops below 70 degrees. We like the Aqueon Minibow, Marineland Contour, and the Aqueon Evolve sets.
Housing them in a small community Tank (10 gal and up): You can keep them in a community tank with other small peaceful fish. Be sure to have a good cover as they can jump. They are social so two or more is best.
Behavior: The African dwarf frog has been known to float in one spot, with its legs and arms completely outstretched, resting on one foot. Sometimes they will just float with arms and legs spread out, drifting on the surface. They will often sleep during the day. Frogs must come to the surface periodically to gulp air.
Feeding: Observe them to make sure food gets to them, we sell special pellets designed for frogs. They will also eat small fish pellets, flake food, freeze-dried Tubifex worms, frozen Mysis shrimp, and frozen bloodworms.
Water Conditions: Frogs are very sensitive to Chlorine in tap water so be sure to use a water conditioner. These frogs need to access the surface to breath air, but they are not the best swimmers, because of this it is not recommended to house them in tanks deeper than 20 inches. Provide a lot of live or fake plants, or aquarium decor to help them grip and get towards the surface for their air.
Temp: 75-82 pH: 6.5-7.5
