Saltwater Basic Sets without sump equipment checklist

Would you like to put together your own saltwater system without a sump filter.  This checklist will help you design a starter system ( 20 to 60 gallon ) that can hold a few hardy marine fish. If you tank is larger than 60 gallon we will recommend a system with a sump filter.

A typical set includes these items:
* Tank
* Glass Top
* Marine LED Light
* Fluval Canister Filter
* Powerheads for extra water flow (one or two)
* Submersible Heater- maintain a temperature of 75-78 degrees
* Thermometer
* Aquarium Net
* Purified RO Saltwater (or Instant Ocean Sea Salt)
* Aragonite Substrate
* Live Aragonite Substrate- helps establish biological filter
* Saltwater Master Test Kit
* pH Buffer
* Hydrometer- to measure salt level
* Chemi-Pure Elite, or Chemi-Pure Blue
* "Life Rock" about 1lb per gallon
* Cabinet Stand

Additional Recommended Items:
* Siphon Tube - to do partial water changes
* Algae Scraper
* 5 Gallon Bucket

How Many Fish? - a rule of thumb is about  1/2 " of fish per gallon. Fish should be stocked slowly. Marine tanks need time to "season" before you add the full capacity. Wait about 8-12  weeks before you fully stock it. You will be able to add hermit crabs, snails, and shrimp during the 6 week break-in period. As an example, a 40 gallon marine tank will hold about 20 inches of fish after 6 weeks.    The system above is not for a complete reef tank with corals.  It is best as a fish only system with some hardy fish such as clownfish.  It is also not appropriate for Angels, butterflies or tangs.
For complete reef systems check out the Red Sea Reefer line.
