Paradise Fish   (Macropodus opercularis)

Beginners?-  A very hardy fish suitable for beginners.

Housing-  This fish is quite adapatable and can tolerate cooler waters. They can be kept in tanks at room temperatures without heaters.   They are adaptable to smaller tanks and can be kept in tanks of 5 gallons or more.
A labryinth organ helps them breathe atmospheric air.    They prefer slow moving water with some bushy plants near the surface.  They fish may be a good choice for a 5-6 gallon aquarium for beginners.  Although they have been kept in small bowls, Elmers does not advise keeping these fish is fish bowls.

Tank Mates-  Paradise fish can be quarrelsome, and they are not good choices for community tanks.  They best housing is usually in a tank to themselves.


Size- grows to 3"

The paradise builds bubblenest to breed.  When in breeding condition they show spectacular color.  Males are more colorful, and have longer fins than females.

Feeding- They will accept a variety of foods.   Feed standard foods with flakes, small pellets, freeze-dried and frozen foods.

Color Varities:   Aquarium bred color varieties include the Albino Paradise, and the Black Paradise
